Lemon and Pistachio Praline and Meringue Torte + Happy First Birthday, Eddie!

lemon and pistachio praline meringue torte

Today, my nephew Eddie turns 1! It’s not every day your first baby turns 1, so when Adele asked me to bake a cake for his birthday party, I told her to pick any recipe and I would make it. Adele loves lemon desserts, and she chose this awesome and fancy torte. I told her I’d only make it if I could make another cake, too. I ended up baking vanilla cupcakes so that Eddie and the other small guests would enjoy a dessert, as well.

His birthday party was a little early, because the holidays got in the way of his birthday plans. Which was great for our blogging schedule, because we were able to post this in time for his big day. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, EDDIE!  Continue reading

Raspberry Whipped Cream Truffle Cake

Carrot Cake, take 2

Carrot cake is one of the best cakes out there. It’s not because of the healthy vegetable hiding in it, either. It’s because of the cream cheese frosting. Everyone knows cream cheese frosting is the best. So even though we’ve made carrot cake before, I saw this recipe in Cook’s Illustrated and thought it would be a perfect Shavuot treat! Thin layers of cake, nuts only on the outside, and something I could bake ahead of time and freeze, how could you go wrong?

Devil’s Food Cake with Chocolate Buttercream

We wanted to make a special dessert when our mom had a full house for Shabbat a couple of weeks ago,  so we consulted Jessica’s favorite book for some inspiration and came across this chocolate cake. Good enough to feed a crowd, because who doesn’t like chocolate, and we made it special by baking three 8-inch layers; we don’t eat 3-layer cakes every Friday!
