Hosting Friday night dinner is not as easy as my mother makes it look; especially when you have a baby who loves to climb all over the place. To make it easier, I decided that my recipes needed to have five ingredients or less—and no fussy stuff!
When Kol Foods offered to send me a product of theirs to review, I was super excited. I have never eaten their food before, but have been curiously browsing the site for their organic, pastured, vegetarian-fed (and delicious) meat and poultry options. I got a whole chicken in the mail. Roasting chicken whole is probably one of my favorite ways to cook chicken. It leaves it moist and juicy, and it’s fancy enough for company.
I know pomegranates are a Rosh Hashanah food, but lately they have been beautiful, giant, and on sale! And I like them no matter what time of the year it is. So, when I saw this recipe for roasted chicken with this sweet and crispy skin, I knew I had to try it, especially because I got some Silan, a date syrup that the recipe called for. Continue reading
Pomegranate is, by far, my favorite Rosh Hashana siman. For this main course, we substitute pomegranate juice for the fresh stuff and counter the tart flavor with honey to symbolize a sweet new year.

I love the taste of roasted garlic. And the smell. So, when years ago I heard of this crazy 40-cloves of garlic chicken, I knew I had to try it. And I did. Very early into my marriage. The problem? I’ve had this recipe cut out since 2007. And have been waiting and waiting to make it ever since. I finally had all the ingredients in my kitchen, and decided that we were going to eat this chicken for dinner. I’m glad I made it! Ah, one-pot meals! I love them. And I’ve been looking for some easy do-ahead meals, as well. So when I saw Anne Burrell make this chicken and cauliflower dish, I decided it was the perfect thing to make for dinner…It was delicious! The chicken had a strong flavor from all the coriander, the texture of the veggies was great due to the nuts I added, and it was so easy to get dinner on the table. Continue reading

Here’s a great Shabbat main dish for you, complete with two bottles of wine, in case you’re entertaining a bunch of friends who can’t agree whether to drink red or white wine.
When I sent this dish over to Gary at Royal Wine Corparation, he told me that artichokes are hard to pair with wine, and sent me an unoaked Chardonnay (Binyamina Reserve) and a fruity and acidic red (Ramon Cardova Rioja).

I love Mario Batali. Yes, he wears Crocs and high socks and talks so quickly it’s hard to understand him, but his use of simple ingredients and fresh flavors to make the most amazing meals is truly a talent. Plus he went to Rutgers (just like Stephanie!) and used to work at Stuff Yer Face in New Brunswick. Best yet is that he didn’t forget about his roots! Oh, and he sports a red beard. Continue reading
